This series is called Awake. It’s an American police procedural that first aired in 2012 and ran for 1 season of 13 episodes that covers an entire story cycle, ending with the last episode. You should watch them in order.
Jason Isaacs plays the lead character, Detective Michael Britten. Isaacs has been in many movies and TV shows, and although he’s a Brit, he does a pitch-perfect American accent in this series. I first came across him as the innocuous looking villain in an Inspector Morse episode called Cherubim and Seraphim. Yes, I’m a bit of a mystery nerd.
The story begins with Detective Britten, his wife and son being involved in a car accident. Britten learns that his wife survived the accident, but tragically, his son died. That night, he closes his eyes to sleep and instead finds himself awake in a world where the opposite is true – his son survived and his wife died.
Every time he goes to sleep in one world, he wakes up in the other. The events in the 2 worlds are different, but related. We, the viewers, and Detective Britten see what happens in both worlds as the stories progress. Each world helps him solve the criminal case he’s working on in the other world.
Detective Britten is also trying to figure out why he’s awake in the 2 worlds. To this end, he talks with a therapist in each world telling them what’s been happening between sessions. The 2 therapists have very different views and give Britten very different interpretations and advice. I will not spoil the surprises by telling you any more.
I hope you enjoy Awake, and let us know what you think when you’re done watching it.
